Decluttering 101: Tips for a Fresh Home and Life

couch, plant, and miscellaneous home items are flying around in a rendering of an apartment

A new year is here, and it’s full of fresh starts and new beginnings. Embrace that in your home and in your life here in Palmer Township, PA by taking a moment (or a few) to declutter. Today’s post for the Palmer View Blog has tips for doing it right!

Know your habits.

The Huffington Post points out that knowing your clutter personality can help you avoid your weak spots, helping you put an end to the piling up in the first place. This will help you establish good habits to end the clutter chaos once and for all, but it will also help you pinpoint just how cluttered your life or your apartment is so you can know where to start tackling the mess first.

Ask yourself some hard questions.

No time is better than the present to get started de-junking your home or your schedule. We’ll talk about it in terms of decluttering your home to help you envision the process.

As you’re tackling a mess, designate an area or a box for things you’ll keep, things you’ll give away or sell, and things you’ll throw away. It’s easy to talk yourself into keeping more items than necessary with phrases like, “I’ll need it someday”, but before you do, ask yourself: Do you really? If you haven’t touched it in a year, it’s time to go. Also, ask yourself if an item truly brings you joy. You can always take photos of sentimental keepsakes and upload them to the Cloud if you really need to keep them forever.

Give every item a home.

Everyone needs a place to belong, and it turns out that items are like that, too. Instead of keeping a drawer in your kitchen for “miscellaneous” items, find a place for each of those items to live permanently. This ensures that you’re making the best use of your space and you know where to look when you need something later.

Don’t overwhelm yourself.

Prioritizing your schedule and your life takes time and effort that all too often escape us. That’s why they stack up and collect dust in the first place! Professional organizers advise against biting off more than you can chew because they know that energy wanes, and decluttering an entire apartment is a momentous task. So take it one project and a couple of hours at a time. Develop good decluttering and minimizing-the-mess habits so you can make and keep a fresh home year round.
